July 2013

Well this month is flying by and we seem to be covering all areas around South East London and Kent.

Area’s we’ve covered in London this month include: Sidcup, Erith, Blackfen, Blackheath, Welling, Charlton, Woolwich, Dulwich Village, Catford, Lewisham, Eltham, New Eltham, Belvedere,  Plumstead, Shooters Hill and Greenwich to name but a few!

In Kent we have been in Swanley, Ash, New Barn, Swanley Village, Longfield, Meopham, Gravesend, Higham, Shorne, Cobham, Rochester, Wainscot, Hoo, Bexley, Westerham, Chelsfield, Hextable, Crockenhill, Farningham, Eynsford, West kingsdown, Hodsell Street, Vigo, Culverstone, Dartford, Bromley, Chislehurst, Kemsing, Halsted, Knockholt, Biggin Hill, PettsWood, Otford, Hawley, Wrotham, Borough Green, Shoreham and many more.

Lots of the work we are getting is coming from Recommendations so this is very pleasing. A very big Thanks to you all who have recommended us and for passing the word around.

We do a huge amount of advertising via door to door flyers and our website clivescottchimneysweeps is continually being updated. The amount of people looking at our site is growing at a steady pace but nothing comes close to being personally recommended.

As always we’ve been out and about, on the Beautiful North Downs and those of you that I visit out on the “Downs” know how passionately I feel about them.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Mr & Mrs L who live in Hodsell Street in the Sevenoaks District. The job that day was to sweep a Clear View Vision Stove with a Stainless Liner, installed a couple of years previously.  This job is usually completed in approximately 30-40 minutes from arrival to departure. This time scale includes checking over the stove for the customer and fully cleaning out every internal part.

But on this day it was not going to be a normal sweep and go, it was going to be an epic!

I was running behind schedule and as is the case in some parts of the North Downs I had no mobile phone signal and to add to my misery the Sat Nav was sending me round in circles. “Yes” I was lost, late and in my mind at “that moment in time” in no hope of finding the customers house. That is until I managed to find a very kind Lady who said “It’s just down the hill on the right my dear but you’ll have to go slow and look out for it because it’s a job to spot”

At Last I had found it and Mr L, with Cocker Spaniel in close proximity greeted me at the gate with a big grin on his face. Had a job finding us eh!

And then the talking started!

For the next hour or so we just chatted away about the area in which they lived, the Stove and their Beautiful House nestling in the Downs. “Once inside” I set about sweeping the Liner and Stripping and Cleaning out the Stove. This Liner had been swept a year before by another Sweep but there was an awkward / unusual feel to this sweep and I explained everything, as I worked, to Mr L who was in close attendance and had all the relevant paper work regarding the install of the stove to hand. We decided that a CCTV inspection would be a good idea, just to be on the safe side, and proceeded to inspect the liner via Camera. As we, and I say we now as by this time Mr L was very much involved, inspected the Liner. Chatting away as we sent the Camera up the liner Mr L, like many others I meet, explained about the troubles the installers had getting the liner in place and so on.

It is quite gratifying when customers such as Mr L actually see “in real time” what you are seeing on the CCTV Monitor. In some cases “unfortunately” we have to give the customer bad news but in this instance we were able to give the customer piece of mind.

Job finished and it was outside once again for another chat and a laugh and joke. Mrs L arrived back and was quite surprised to see me still there I think. Or maybe not!!!!

At clivescottchimneysweeps we always believe in giving the customer, Services, second to none and in the summer months we are able to spend a bit more time with them due to our slightly lower work load.

As I stated when I first started writing my blog, it will not always be written about technical details on Stoves, Open Fires, Liners, Chimney Safety in general, although that will always remain “Paramount,” but will also include some stories of my travels and some of the great characters I meet along the way.

A Question I get asked a lot when I am out and about is “What Areas do you cover”?  “Do you Sweep in Westerham, Chatham, Borough Green, Chelsfield, Sunndridge, Orpington, Bromley, Swanley or Sidcup? The list of areas we get asked about goes on and on! Well the answer to this is “Yes we work all the above and many more”!

So with this in mind we will shortly be adding a map to the website which will let you all know exactly where we usually operate. The Areas we will outline are definitely not set in stone as we will, within reason, travel almost anywhere, to Sweep and work on the Maintenance Chimneys.
